Janice started as a staff nurse more than three decades ago. Today, she is the clinical nurse manager of a unit where she takes care of some of the most serious heart patients.
As a veteran nurse, Janice has never stopped learning. She earned her master’s degree in nursing administration in 2020.
Janice’s unit is known for being the most diverse in the hospital. It has more nationalities, races and ages represented than in any other group in the system. Janice works to celebrate this diversity on a map displayed in her unit, marked to show the teammate’s national origins. She also works to recruit nurses from around the world.
Outside of work, Janice dedicates herself to improving the lives of others in North Carolina. Serving on the Governor’s Minority Health Council, she works with other stakeholders to improve issues such as women and children’s health, especially for underserved populations.
Nursing runs in Janice’s family. Her mom trained as a nurse in her native Jamaica, and several of her aunts and siblings are nurses. Janice’s daughter works as a nurse as well.
