CHAPEL HILL - Scientists now understand how an important protein converts chemical energy to mechanical force, thus powering the process of cell division, thanks to a new structural model by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers.

Dr. Jack Griffith, Kenan distinguished professor of microbiology and immunology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, has received the Great Gold Medal of Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia.
N.C. Jaycee Burn Center at UNC Hospitals hosts Southern Region Burn Conference, celebrates its 25th anniversary
CHAPEL HILL – This weekend the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center at UNC Hospitals will host the 19th annual Southern Region Burn Conference at the Washington Duke Inn in Durham. In addition, the doctors, nurses and staff of the 21-bed unit will celebrate its 25th anniversary Friday night in a banquet held at the Carolina Club at the George Watts Hill Alumni Center on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus.

Dr. Cherri D. Hobgood has been appointed associate dean for curriculum and educational development in UNC’s School of Medicine, effective Nov. 1.
People briefs: Burkhart and Zylka honored
Dr. Craig Burkhart, a resident physician in dermatology at UNC Hospitals, has been selected by the American Academy of Dermatology to receive its Member Making a Difference Award. Also, Mark Zylka, Ph.D., assistant professor of cell and molecular physiology in the UNC School of Medicine, has been named a 2007 Searle Scholar, which provides $240,000 over three years in support of his research on neural circuits and pain. The Searle Scholars award supports exceptional young faculty across the biomedical sciences and in chemistry.
Fifth N.C. Children’s Promise Celebration raises $631,508
CHAPEL HILL – A preliminary accounting shows that the fifth N.C. Children’s Promise radiothon/telethon raised $631,508, an increase of $167,682 or 36 percent over the previous year.
UNC to lead national study of schizophrenia drug side effects
CHAPEL HILL - Drugs commonly used to treat schizophrenia often cause unwanted and dangerous side effects, such as weight gain and elevated cholesterol. But a new clinical trial led by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Medicine will study strategies to reduce those problems while effectively treating the disorder.
