July 21

Amanda Nelson, M.D., will receive the 2009 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Distinguished Fellow Award at the ACR awards ceremony, Friday, October 16. This award is given to clinical and research fellows who are nominated while in a rheumatology fellowship training program, in recognition of their meritorious performance throughout their training.

Dr. Vicki Bae-Jump, M.D., Ph.D.,
and Paola Gehrig, M.D., received a V Foundation for Cancer Research Grant for their endometrial cancer research.

UNC Hospitals' Gynecology services
ranked 24th in the 2009 U.S. News & World Report issue for America's Best Hospitals; up from 33rd in 2008.

UNC Hospitals' Kidney services
ranked 28th in the 2009 U.S. News & World Report issue for America's Best Hospitals.

UNC Hospitals' Cancer services, soon to be house in the N.C. Cancer Hospital, ranked 37th in the 2009 U.S. News & World Report issue for America's Best Hospitals.

UNC Health Care’s Nutrition and Food Service department
was designated a “Red Apple” by the N.C. Prevention Partners for their efforts to offer nutritious foods in retail operations. View the full article on the award here.

UNC Hospitals Transportation and Amy Preble, UNC’s Recycling Outreach Coordinator, were honored at the Smart Commute Challenge awards ceremony on June 25  hosted by NBC-17’s Donald Jones at RTP Headquarters.

  • Preble literally walks the talk. She does not own a car but walks, takes the bus or uses Zipcars as her means of transportation, and was honored for always making her first choice a commute alternative to driving.
  • UNC Hospitals partners with the University to extend participation to all employees, in all the University commute incentive programs, through its own independent Transportation Office. The Hospitals also provide their own shuttle services to employees and continuously inform employees of alternatives, seek out additional assistance for their employees, and host commuter information programs three times a year to inform employees about new ideas for becoming a cleaner, greener institution.


Amy Mottl, M.D., recently published the article “Linkage Analysis of Albuminuria”, which looks at the genetics of proteinuria, in the Journal of American Society of Nephrology.

Kathy Sulik, Ph.D., professor in the department of cell and developmental biology and director of the fetal toxicology division in the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies, was the recipient for the 2009 Henry Rosett Award. The award, presented in June at the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Study Group (FASDSG) in San Diego, CA, honors individuals for outstanding long-term contributions to research in the field of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Lee R. Berkowitz, M.D., the Eunice Bernhard Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Associate Chair for Education in the Department of Medicine, has been elected to the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Board of Directors.  ABIM sets the standards and certifies physicians practicing in internal medicine and its subspecialties who possess the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to provide high quality care.

Jacqueline Harden, R.N., B.S.N, C.C.R.N., NE-BC, received the 2009 Fran Ross Memorial Scholarship Award for outstanding contributions in UNCH Nursing Leadership on June 19.

Greg Mears, M.D., briefed the White House administration on the importance of EMS and Data Collection on Thursday, June 25. Dr. Mears, as well as representatives from NHTSA and NEMSIS, presented to officials from the Department of Homeland Security on the grounds of the White House.
