Travis A. Meredith, M.D., Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology, is serving as President of the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO). The AUPO is composed of Department heads, residency directors, and research directors of Ophthalmology Departments in the United States and Canada.
Klaus Hahn, Ph.D., Ronald Thurman Distinguished Professor in the Department of Pharmacology, has been invited to give two plenary lectures over the next year. One is at the 2009 International Conference of Systems Biology (ICSB) at Stanford in September on the topic of Chemical Tools. The other is at the 2010 Korean Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Annual Meeting.
James Wallace, M.P.H., M.D., recieved a Kaiser Permanente Excellence in Teaching Award. These awards were created by the Class of 2000 to recognize those residents and interns who contribute in an exemplary way to the education of medical students with their enthusiasm for teaching, including students in patient care decisions, and promoting involvement of students in the medical team.

Dr. Gwyn Bryant and Dr. Kelly Hankins have been selected to receive the Kaiser Permanente Excellence in Teaching Awards awarded by the 4th year class of UNC's School of Medicine. Award ceremony will take place during the School of Medicine’s 2009 Richard H. Whitehead Lecture on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at 12 p.m. in 2204 Medical Biomolecular Research Building.
Gretchen Stuart, M.D., M.P.H., received a $15,000 grant from the Society of Family Planning (SFP), for A Pilot Study of Early Postpartum Intrauterine Contraception.
Denniz Zolnoun, M.D., M.P.H., has been asked to serve on Advisory Board for the NIH's study called ICEPAC (IC Elucidation of Psychophysiological and Autonomic Characteristics).
Robert Gwyther, M.D., M.B.A., is among the first physicians in the United States to be named a Diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM). He received the honor in May at the ABAM's Inaugural Diplomates Luncheon in New Orleans.
Fulton Crews, Ph.D., professor and director of the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies, delivered the 2009 Wendy and Stanley Marsh 3 Endowed Lectureship in Pharmacology and Neurochemistry of Substance Abuse/Addition at the Texas Tech University on June 16-17, 2009. Dr. Crews has also been invited to be plenary speaker at the 2009 Austrian Neuroscience Association meeting in Salzburg, Austria, on Sept. 18, and to give the Okey Memorial Lecture at the Psychiatry Research Trust in London, England, on Nov. 17.

Jimmy Barnes, R.Ph., M.P.H., Pharmacy Clinical Manager, won the National Pharmaceutical Association's (NPhA) 2009 NPhA Health Systems Practitioner Award. This award recognizes contributions made to health systems pharmacy as a staff pharmacist or manager while providing significant improvements in the provision of pharmaceutical care.
Fulton Crews, Ph.D., Professor and Director of the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies, was invited twice to be Plenary Speaker and was awarded three lectureships as follows:
- The Plenary Lecture “Mechanisms of Neurodegeneration and Regeneration During Alcohol Dependence and Recovery”
- Wendy and Stanley Marsh 3 Endowed Lectureship in Pharmacology and Neurochemistry of Substance Abuse/Addiction, to be given in Salzburg, Austria , Sept. 18, 2009. st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) }
- Okey Memorial Lecture: Psychiatry Research Trust, to be given in London, England, Nov. 17, 2009.
Peter H. Gilligan, Ph.D., has been elected to the Board of Governors of the American Academy of Microbiology and will serve as the dean of the American College of Microbiology. The college oversees the society’s certification and accreditation programs.
Susan Hadler, M.D, M.S., received the following awards this year:
- Professor Award from the Medical School Class of 2009
- UNC School of Dentistry Teaching Award from the Class of 2012
- The 2009 Hyman L. Battle Distinguished Excellence in Teaching Award in Basic Sciences
Michael Kappelman, M.D., M.P.H., received the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) Clinical Young Investigator Award. He received this honor based on an abstract he submitted for the national meeting.
Victoria Madden received the 2009 C. Knox Massey Distinguished Service Award.
Nobuyo Maeda, Ph.D., received the 2009 Journal of Lipid Research 50th Anniversary Lectureship Award.
C. Ryan Miller, M.D., Ph.D., received the extremely prestigious Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation Clinical Investigator Award effective July 1, 2009, for three years. The Award was created to support exceptionally promising young physician scientists pursing translational and clinical cancer research careers.
Melissa B. Miller, Ph.D., received the 2009 Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics Young Investigator Award presented by the American Society for Microbiology.
Agnes Moses, M.D., has been selected to receive the 2009 International Leadership Award from The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. The award was announced during the 2009 International AIDS Society conference, held recently in Cape Town, South Africa. Read complete news release at http://uncnews.unc.edu/content/view/2733/107/.
Oliver Smithies, D.Phil., was inducted into the Order of the Golden Fleece which is considered the highest honorary society at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Order of the Golden Fleece selects its members based upon service to the University as reflected in scholarship, motivation, creativity, loyalty and leadership in academic and extracurricular pursuits. Dr. Smithies also received the following awards:
- The American Institute of Chemists 2009, Gold Medal Award
- University of Wisconsin-Madison Honorary Degree, Doctor of Science
- UNC-CH Chapter of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society
- Rocovich Gold Medal
- Doctor Honoris Causa, from the University of Sao Paulo
Richard R. Tidwell, Ph.D., was named Kenan Distinguished Professor effective July 1, 2009.
