Selection Process

Selecting the Best for UNC Health Care
As part of our Commitment to Caring, UNC Health Care has initiated the Hiring for Excellence program. The tools used in this program have proven effective in identifying candidates who best fit the positions for which they are applying. Through Hiring for Excellence, we are better able to select and retain outstanding team members whose contribution will further UNC Health Care’s mission to become the nation’s leading public academic medical center.

As hiring managers review applications, they will identify the most viable candidates, who will then complete an electronic assessment to help evaluate their work style and judgment skills. Managers will determine who to interview based on assessment scores and job-related criteria.

Applicants who are selected to continue through the hiring process will be interviewed using behavioral-based questions that seek examples of their individual actions in specific situations and the outcome of those actions—some successful and some not.

If you are contacted for an interview, please prepare by thinking of examples from your education and work experience in which you took actions such as:

  • Making decisions
  • Managing projects
  • Influencing others
  • Recommending improvements
  • Developing innovative ideas
  • Solving problems
  • Coaching others
  • Handling conflicts

Candidates who consider these questions prior to interviewing will increase their chances for a productive experience, and those hired through this process will help sustain our culture of extraordinary service and operational excellence.
