NC Flex Critical Illness Insurance
A Cancer Insurance plan is available to eligible UNC Health Care employees through the North Carolina Flexible Benefits Program (NC Flex). The plan is offered through Allstate Workplace Division (AWD). This benefit is designed to cover or reimburse employees for expenses that are related to the treatment of cancer but are not typically covered by health insurance, such as transportation and lodging. There are various coverage levels to choose from based on your needs. In addition to cancer coverage, benefits are paid for 29 other specified diseases.
The NC Flex Cancer Plan is available to all regular employees who work 20 or more hours per week. Premiums are deducted on a pre-tax basis.
The effective date of this benefit is the 1st day of the month after the date of hire or eligibility change. Enrollment must be completed online.

Critical Illness Insurance
A Critical Illness Insurance plan is available to eligible UNC Health Care employees through the North Carolina Flexible Benefits Program (NC Flex). The plan is offered through Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. This benefit pays a lump-sum payment when a covered person experiences a covers condition such as a heart attack, cancer or major organ transplant. The lump-sum payment may be used in any way the employee chooses to help keep finances on track.
