UNC Rehabilitation Center

If you or your loved one is recovering from a disability due to accident or illness , we are here to help at each milestone.

 UNC Rehabilitation Gym

Our mission is to improve, restore and maintain functional abilities in patients with disabilities, educate health care professionals in rehabilitative care and services, and advance rehabilitation research.

The UNC Rehabilitation Center Advantage
Patients benefit from our interdisciplinary team of professionals and also from immediate access to UNC’s breadth of medical and educational services. UNC Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) faculty are an integral part of the UNC Health Care System and supports its philosophy of community service throughout North Carolina and beyond. Additionally, our rehabilitation team consistently receives national and international recognition for their excellence and commitment to patient-based clinical care and research.

Additionally, UNC Rehabilitation Center has been reaccredited for three years by Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) International, a human services accreditation agency. This accreditation represents the highest level awarded and demonstrates UNC Rehabilitation Center's commitment to offering programs and services that are measurable, accountable, and of the highest quality. Notably, CARF surveyors made no recommendations, signifying that the on-site reviewers did not identify any areas of nonconformance to the standards. We are proud to say that according to CARF this is "an extraordinary accomplishment,  only the top three percent of CARF surveys result in no recommendations".

Professionals Who Support UNC Rehabilitation Center
UNC Rehabilitation services are provided by skilled professionals led by the UNC PM&R Faculty.  Professionals include a pharmacist, psychologists, occupational and physical therapists, speech therapists, recreational therapists, and the rehabilitation nursing and support staff of the UNC Rehabilitation Center.

At the Center of it all is the UNC Rehabilitation Center
The Rehabilitation Center strives to optimize each patient’s physical function – including self-care, mobility, bowel and bladder management, speech, swallowing, adaptation to disability and potential for vocational productivity. The Rehabilitation Center’s continuum of services includes inpatient care, sub-acute services and outpatient clinics, as well as hospital and community support groups.  Our Rehabilitation Center treats individuals with a variety of conditions including, but not limited to, the following:

"One of the highlights is that over 79 percent of our patients are able to return to the community, which is considerably better than the national average of about 68 percent. One of the reasons for this is that our patients are making more functional gains during their stay in a shorter amount of time, which results in more patients discharging home."

Mike Hartge, MSN, RN, CRRN Nurse Manager, Rehabilitation Center
